Ever wanted to know how your car changes gears without you having to do anything? It is all thanks to a thingy called an automatic transmission shifter!, we’ll discuss what an automatic transmission shifter is, how it has changed over time and how to maintain it so that your ride is a smooth one.
The automatic transmission shifter is one very important part of your vehicle which enables you to shift the gears without having to do that manually. It’s typically on the center console between the front seats for driver and passenger, or can be a lever on the steering column. When you shift from park to drive, you are commanding the car to gear itself to a certain speed.
Amazingly enough, automatic transmission shifters have changed dramatically since they were first introduced. In ye olden times, these shifters were essentially a pair of simple levers that you flipped back and forth to change gears. Many cars now come with electronic shifters, which rely on sensors and computer systems to shift gears without requiring the driver to take action, based on driving conditions. Some newer cars also feature paddle shifters on the steering wheel to give you more power over your gear shifts.
Automatic Transmission Shifters There are many different types of automatic transmission shifters, each with its own set of unique features. The most common types include:
Shifter is locked in park: While your shifter can become stuck in park for a variety of reasons (more on that below), you can usually get out of park without a trip to the repair center.
Trouble shifting gears: If you struggle to get the shifter to move from one gear to another, it’s possible that low transmission fluid or a worn out shifter cable are to blame.
Unusual noise or shaking: If you’re hearing a strange noise or feeling a vibration while shifting gears, there may be issues with the transmission or the shifter linkage.
